True cost of ownership

What a PIA really costs you each year

One all-in yearly cost per provider, so a bank, a life company and an investing app can be compared on equal terms. Firms have not yet published PIA fees, so the table fills in as they do.

The PIA tax, shown on its own line

The State charge is the same whichever provider you choose: no PIA tax on value up to and including €50,000, then 1% on the excess only. It is never mixed into a firm's fees.

  • €40,000 account → €0 PIA tax a year
  • €52,000 account → €20 PIA tax a year
  • €100,000 account → €500 PIA tax a year

In the Finance Bill, not yet law

Figures from section 26 of the Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026, published 19 October 2026.

Method: what goes into the total

  • Provider / platform fee
  • Fixed account fee
  • Fund ongoing charge
  • Adviser or broker commission
  • Dealing and FX fees
  • Entry, exit and switching charges

Percentage charges are applied to each balance; fixed euro charges are added as-is. Dealing and FX costs assume one purchase a month. One-off entry, exit or switching charges are spread over a ten-year holding. Every figure links to the firm's own published terms with the date we checked. Missing figures are never estimated.
